About the Image Filters

A dark photo, a washed-out scan or a colour picture that would look better in black and white usually does not need a full photo editor. This tool gives you three sliders, for brightness, contrast and saturation, plus grayscale, sepia and invert switches. They can all be combined, and the result is drawn at full resolution in your browser.

What you can do

• Set brightness, contrast and saturation anywhere from 0 to 200 percent; 100 leaves the image unchanged.
• Switch on Grayscale, Sepia or Invert, alone or together.
• Mix toggles with sliders, for example sepia with extra contrast for an old-print look.
• Press Reset to put every slider back to 100 and turn all toggles off.

When it works best

• Lifting an underexposed photo taken indoors or at dusk.
• Turning a scanned page into clean grayscale with stronger contrast so the text stands out.
• Giving a set of images a consistent black-and-white or sepia style.

Things to know

• Filters are applied in your own browser and the image is never uploaded.
• Effects apply to the whole picture; there are no masks, curves or per-area adjustments.
• Pushing brightness or contrast to the extremes clips highlights and shadows, and that detail cannot be recovered from the saved file.
• The image is saved in its original format and size. Use Compress Image afterwards if you also need a smaller file.
